- He said the president was under no obligation to consult with them first - The Borno governor said the governors would work and support Buhari’s ambition Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to seek re-election in 2019 saying governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress were in support. Daily Trust reports that the governor spoke after meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, April 9.
He said the president has been under immense pressure to make his decision known and was not obliged to consult with governors first. He said: “He is not under any obligation to consult governors or anybody. He has been under tremendous pressure to make that pronouncement. So, we should heave a sigh of relief since he has finally announced his intention to contest.” The governor reiterated that APC governors were in support of Buhari and will give him tremendous support. He said: "Traditionally, the president has the right of first refusal of the candidature of the party. So, it is not something that is unusual or unwarranted or unconstitutional. The Borno governor asked if the declaration would affect the president’s governance said: "Certainly, it is not distracting government, it will even calm down governance so that people will concentrate on the real act of governance and deliver the dividends of democracy." On Buhari’s chances of winning the 2019 election, Shettima said: "Certainly, he is the single kinetic president in Nigeria’s political life till date."

Malam Garba Shehu, the president’s senior special assistant on media and Publicity confirmed this development in a statement in Abuja on Monday. He said that the president made the declaration at a closed-door meeting of the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja. The presidential aide quoted President Buhari as saying that he was responding to the clamour by Nigerians to re-contest in 2019, adding that he wanted to give the NEC, the honour of notifying them first. Should President Buhari seek re-election in 2019.
